When I look in the mirror, sometimes I wonder who is looking back at me. Not long ago I had a thin, shapely body, full, shiny hair and flawless skin. Now I find that parts of me look best covered in a big shirt. My hair is thinning a bit and although I have blemish- free skin, it has some wrinkles. I exercise, but parts of me still sag. I use products for thinning hair with some success, but long for the thick, shiny hair that I once took for granted. I have tried creams and lotions that promise to return my skin to its once supple, flawless state, but with unsatisfactory results. I plan to continue my battle with the aging process, but I know this is inevitable. I often look at other “mature women”, especially those who have a timeless beauty, and try to find their secret.
What I find surprises me time and time again; they do exactly what I do! These women eat healthy food, exercise and take time to invest in their spirit. In an effort to overcome our struggle with Father Time, summon that youthful beauty and seek that illusive trait “inner beauty” it seems we’re doing the right things after all!
My strategy is to continue the fight and work on loving myself as I am. I am actually surprised when I sometimes hear people refer to me as “beautiful” and wonder what they see. Most people think I am younger than I am, despite these nightly thefts I told you about. Maybe it’s all in my head. Maybe other women look to me for my “secret”.
I believe my so-called “secret” in slowing the natural aging process is my healthy diet, a little exercise and quiet time. Eating healthy foods, above all, provides the fuel to keep my body in the best possible condition. Eating well is also enjoyable and easy. One of my favorites is a vegetable sauté with olive oil and minced garlic. I like to use a summer squash when it’s in season. It’s a wonderful side dish and can be made into a quick and easy main dish with the addition of a protein. I also love fruit smoothies and make mine with a frozen, peach puree base and add in some frozen raspberries, a banana and some vanilla. I also make easy eggplant parmesan. I dip the eggplant in milk, beaten egg, then breadcrumbs and sauté in olive oil. It gives the eggplant a nice crunch. All of this talk of food is making me hungry!
At the end of the day it’s reassuring to know that it’s the simple things we can do to make us look and feel 20 again. And, if I ever wake in the night and catch the body snatcher, I’ll be sure to reclaim all that was taken from me!
