Candice Broom is an at-home mother of two who worried that not using the skills she learned while earning her college degrees, which include a BS in Mass Communications and an MA in Teaching, would make it difficult to find a rewarding job after her children started school.
Broom began keeping a blog as a personal journal of her experiences as a mom, but soon realized the potential for creating income. One year ago, Broom began writing product reviews on her blog at www.MomMostTraveled.com, a name she chose because of the regular trips the Broom family makes to Asia, where her husband Nick works to develop the education system in impoverished areas.
Since May 2008, blogging has given Broom exciting opportunities to partner with a wide range of companies, including Baby Bjorn, Medela, Hasbro, and Boon.
“My blogging hobby has turned into a professional endeavor,” says Broom, “I never could have dreamed the rewarding professional relationships I have developed with some amazing companies, not to mention the friendships with other mom bloggers. I am a part of an exciting online community.”
Those in the Mommy Blogging community are finding themselves wooed by advertisers, many of whom give product samples or other incentives to encourage site owners to write about their products online.
Many companies are also sponsoring contests and giveaways on mommy blogs, hoping to excite the online community about their products. As a hobby, Broom frequently enters these promotions and has won hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise and gift cards.
“Blogging seems to be recession proof,” says Broom, “my lifestyle has definitely improved since becoming a blogger!”
