The 505 division event started on August 23, 2009, with 98 boats hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club based at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Sponsored by APL and SAP, the competitors raced each day and on some days, they raced twice. By Friday, the Bay area was suffering under an intense heat wave. Coupled with this, the race start was continuously pushed back later and later, waiting for wind.
By contrast, Saturday's wind was blowing a brisk 20-to-25 knots, which produced choppy seas. There were several knockdowns and one vessel was actually sunk, possibly due to damage from turtling in the less than 15 feet of water. The two-man team was picked out of the water with no injuries.
