Leading car rental consolidator ArgusCarHire.com is issuing a serious warning about a severe shortage in rental vehicles during peak travel periods this year.
The crisis is predicted to be much worse than the fleet shortages that occurred in the Caribbean and South Africa in early 2009. The shortfall will hit summer holidaymakers in Europe the hardest, but those travelling to winter sun favourites Florida and the Canary Islands are also expected to struggle to find a rental car.
Commenting on the situation, spokesperson for ArgusCarHire.com, Barry Malone said: "We're experiencing an unprecedented drop in the amount of vehicles available for rental this year. There are several contributing factors, many of which are related to the global economic downturn. In the current climate, banks don't want to take the risk of financing fleets and garages that lease vehicles don't want to risk buying back vehicles that they can't sell on. What this means for consumers is that we won't have as many cars for rental as in previous years. During regular peak times, we advise our customers to book six weeks in advance but now we're talking months. Customers who book their car hire at the last minute this year will face the harsh reality of settling for a car that doesn't meet their needs, or worse still, no car at all."
