A recent study carried out by leading career coaching company Personal Career Management found that 94% of CVs reviewed were not good enough to make it to the next stage of the recruitment process. 450 CVs were studied by the company who discovered 81% had errors in spelling or grammar and a further 13% were poorly displayed or used irrelevant, clumsy language.
“You’re Hired! How to Write a Brilliant CV”, a book by Corinne Mills, managing director, Personal Career Management, covers the pitfalls of CV writing, as well as providing expert advice on writing the perfect CV.
Mills said, “Many of the people whose CVs end up in the wastepaper bin are perfectly capable of doing the job. However, a poor CV means they will not get the opportunity to prove it. Why would anyone want to employ a lawyer or secretary who makes spelling mistakes or errors? If they can’t pay attention to their own CV, why would you trust them to work on any of your company’s documents?”
The badly written CVs came from a variety of different types of job seekers including highly educated CEOs, professionals and recent graduates, proving that poorly written CVs are equally common among high level professionals as they are among junior staff.
Julian Acquari, managing director, Monster UK and Ireland, commented, “In the current economic climate it is vital that people searching for jobs do not sabotage their chances and fall at the first hurdle by submitting CVs with mistakes. Spelling and grammar errors or typographical errors do not convey a conscientious work ethic, and many employers only need to see one mistake to send your CV straight to the recycle bin. Your CV is a potential employer’s first introduction to you, so it’s vital that it makes a good impression. ”
For anyone currently job seeking, Personal Career Management recommends taking the following steps before submitting your CV:
• Check: Check, double-check and then ask someone else to check your CV to ensure there are no mistakes.
• Watch your language: Include content that is relevant to the job in question, providing examples to back up your statements. Use language that is concise rather than jargon-heavy.
• Visuals: Ensure that your CV looks good, using a clean consistent style, consistent fonts and formatting that is visually pleasing and makes the information easy to read.
