The VAT Marketplace:
Increasing levels of optimism are gradually creeping into the market, through more stable workflow and rising levels of M&A tax work. This, combined with the increasing likelihood that HMRC are going to continue moving away from their recent stance of conciliation in order to tackle the financial deficit, means that the tax marketplace in general has good reason to feel the worst of the recession is over.
VAT has remained relatively healthy in 2009 to date, both in terms of workflow and candidate traffic; post Conde Naste/Fleming, consultancy work remains stable within accountancy firms, especially as businesses have found VAT savings to be beneficial to the bottom line in times where profitability has been so badly affected. This has led to cautious growth within VAT functions across the grades UK wide and so career opportunities in this field have avoided the stagnation witnessed in CT within practice.
Should the ‘Double Dip’ be avoided, most senior VAT practitioners within practice feel that potential recruitment will be both necessary and a realistic target in late Q1 of 2010; combined with increased bank lending and confidence, Q2 may actually be the end of the storm.
"The prospects for the indirect tax professional remain bright with indirect tax career opportunities on offer in professional services firms and a number of in-house organisations." says James Bain, consultant." We are seeing a greater demand for contract roles in the FTSE and this is a trend that will continue in 2010. We predict a stable market in the UK and Western Europe and career options in the Far East at the beginning of 2010."
