In an unprecedented move the Ridgewood High School Class of 1969 is taking their 40th Reunion on the road.  The gathering July 17-19 at the Sand Dunes Resort, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, duped “Vegas with waves”.  Granted the gambling is on a cruise ship that goes to international waters, but there is shopping, golfing, tennis, and live shows. The hotel offers surfing, sport fishing, parasailing, jet skis, white sand, three pools, a water slide and a lazy river. “Don’t get us wrong,” say Sally Franz, coordinator, “Ridgewood (and Ho-Ho-Kus) was an idyllic place to grow up. But it is not a resort. Many of our classmates have lost our parents, re-located or retired and Ridgewood, doesn’t have any large resort type hotels.”  She continued, “If you are going to drop a couple of grand on a reunion, why not make it fun? Having a “Destination Reunion” just made sense. Our committee of 12 wanted to go to the Jersey Shore, but it was twice the price as Myrtle Beach with less to do. The Sand Dunes Resort is handling all the organization of the event: rooms, reception (casual/Hawaiian shirts), live music, Karaoke, and offering great discounted room rates. And there is a KOA site in South Myrtle Beach.” When asked if there was resistance to not having the reunion back in New Jersey in the Fall. Franz laughed, “A few people didn’t like the idea, but they are the ones who live in New Jersey. They didn’t have to fly in and find a hotel room in Paramus like the rest of us did reunion after reunion. But there are classmates coming to Myrtle Beach from Australia, London, California, Texas, Florida as well of those of us who are now living below the Mason-Dixon line. This is “Inaugural RHS Beach Blast!” is going to be a three day event…we are going to party like it was 1969.” Anyone from RHS (classes 66-72) is invited to join us. ‘Destination Reunions’ are a growing phenomenon, with groups taking cruises, going to major resort island or booking adventure experiences. “Who knows, the next reunion after this may be on a cruise out of Key West,” suggested Franz, “at our age travel has to have a lot of benefits, options and ease.” For details: Gerontos@Earthlink.net, Facebook.com: Sallyfranz, Classmates.com: Sallyfranz, Skype.com: Sallyfranz, Twitter.com: Sallyfranz, MySpace.com: Sallyfranz, Linkedin.com: Sallyfranz, or www.BabyBoomerTalkRadio.com: Host Sally Franz, or Earcooler.com
