We enter 2009 with 238,000 more people unemployed than since the start of 2008. The number of people under the cloud of redundancy is the highest since 1997. Historically companies making redundancies would buy in professional support, called outplacement - http://www.personalcareermanagement.com/corporate-servic ... for their staff to help them into their next job. As the credit crisis hits companies more severely than ever before, employers have increasingly reduced this support or provided none at all. For those made redundant, many are unsure about how to tackle a difficult job market on their own.
The good news is that quality professional help is available and here’s a great tip from the UK leaders in career coaching, Personal Career Management, on how to save hundreds of pounds on outplacement and career support that can help you get back into employment quicker and in addition obtain a job that’s better suited to your skills, experience and wants.
Personal Career Managements MD, Jonathan Mills explains: “We take each client through a career management programme using a highly skilled career coach as their personal guide. To start with we help them understand their own skills, work values and their requirements from a future job. We look at all options that are suitable and then we are able to match where their skills and experience will be best placed. In going through this process before jumping into their CV, our clients have a better understanding of what they really want and why. They feel more comfortable that they’ve properly explored options and have selected the best one for them. When we move on to their CV all their relevant experience is specifically targeted at the job that’s right for them. Their job search campaign is far more focused and they are genuinely enthusiastic about what they are going for. The end result is they get a better job quicker.”
Diarmid, a corporate lawyer, looking to make a move out from law but not knowing quite what next explains the benefits he found of using professional career coaching. “Initially, I looked through job adverts in the paper and took a scattergun approach. But it was difficult to sell myself as anything but a lawyer. Then I heard about “career coaching”, met a number of firms and chose Personal Career Management.”
Diarmid said: “They helped me develop a clear vision of what I wanted to do. So I switched from a scattergun approach to a refined, distilled approach.”
The result was that at the interview, Diarmid felt “very natural”. He said: “It wasn’t me pretending to be something I’m not. I knew I was going for a job that I wanted. I had a clear message about what I wanted to do and why and what I could offer. And that meant I was more confident and could explain why I was switching from being a lawyer. I’ve now got a fantastic Consultancy role that utilises my experience in law.”
Personal Career Management advise people going through the redundancy process to first ask their employer if they will pay for career coaching – as part of a negotiated exit. If that fails, then ask the employer to pay for the service and to deduct the ex VAT cost off their final salary pay cheque. This allows the individual to get the service without paying VAT. The employer doesn’t lose out either. This can save the individual between £300 and £400 in VAT on a typical programme.
Career coaching programmes range from around £2,000 to £3,000. For many, this is around a week’s salary but can knock months off a job hunting campaign as well as getting you into a better, more suited job - often with more money.
