Ten Tips For The First Time College Student

Ten Tips to help the First Time College Student

Going to college and being away from home is exciting, nerve racking, and a bit scary for both the student as well as the parents.  What to bring and how much to spend especially in economic trying times so here a few tips to help you along. Tip#1 – Books – I don’t kid you they are expensive so before making your purchase through the book store, get a list of the books you need and start comparing price on the net at such places as Amazon.com, Half.com, Abebooks.com as you can save quite a bit. Tip#2 – Mattress Pad – Whether your student is living in a dorm or a furnished off campus apartment a mattress pad is a must!  You don’t know who’s been there before. Tip#3 – Bedding – The first night is usually the hardest so why not make it the most comfortable.  A down comforter for those cold study nights, at least two twin XL sheet sets that include the fitted, flat, and pillow case so when one is in the wash the other is on the bed.  We have some great deals on reversible down comforters that will add a splash of color and a feel of home.   Tip#4 – Bath – It is a good idea for them to bring a pair of flip/flops or shower shoes, since they are sharing a bathroom with others in their dorm or a room mate.  We recommend at least two to four towels to get them through the semester.  You can also add a washcloth but a more economical choice would be a bath scrunchy or loufa since they last longer than a wash cloth. Tip#5 – Kitchen – we recommend at least a service for four including eating utensils.  It will be inevitable that one of their room mates will forget to bring something to eat with or on.  At least one sauce pan, one frying pan, and one bake pan and if possible non-stick it makes cleaning a lot easier. Tip#6 – Some dorms are not equipped with a fridge and contrary to what some believe, after the campus kitchen is closed it’s a great place to keep snacks and drinks.  If used is not an issue you may want to check out your local hotel/motels and see if they are in the process of refurbishing their hotel rooms, sometimes if they are in that process they sell off all of their furniture and room amenities.  If new you can view vickiesvariety.com, Tip#7 – Food– If the student is in an apartment equipped with a kitchen, then we would recommend some basic staples in bulk, Raman Noodles, pasta, sauce, a can of ice tea mix, frozen white bread dough so that they can bake their bread fresh when needed.   Tip#8 – Cleaning supplies – We recommend at least a broom and shovel, carpet sweeper, laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer papers, dish soap and/or dishwasher soap (for those that are lucky), bath soap (bulk so that they can re-fill their bottle), Shampoo and conditioner (bulk so that they can refill their bottle), All purpose cleaner for the kitchen and bath. Tip# 9 – We recommend a basic First Aide Kit to include Band-Aids, Peroxide and Neosporin. Tip#10 – Our last tip would be a picture of home to give them a sense that your not that far away.
