Association Las Tias (the Aunties) is an independent, non profit organization set up by a group of merchant women in Leon. The organization started in 1989, focusing on children with drug problems, such as glue sniffing. But seeing the needs of children who where at high risk of getting into drug taking, they extended their focus to younger ages to prevents others falling into the same habits. To give the children better attention, las tias was divided into two programs for different age group. The first one is a preventative program for children from 6 to 14 years that directly helps 100 child workers from a local market and indirectly helps 500 children, offering support and opportunities in school, art and dance. The second is a vocational program for 14 to 18 years, focusing on group of 30 youth. These youths receive psychological and recreational therapy and are also incorporated into workshop for carpentry, photography, and leather work, as well as primary and secondary school. Volunteers must be of age 22 or above with minimum education of Undegraduation
. Volunteers can assist by doing following tasks:- The work mainly involves helping the kids with their homework, teaching writing, mathematics, English, etc. doing art classes, organizing activities and participating on sport days. Las Tias are always looking for professional or under graduates, teachers, psychologist, social workers and health care workers that want to work as volunteer with them. As mention before they have a workshop where they teach different works to youths, so if you have skills in carpentry, leather work, or any other that we might not know, we welcome the skills you bring and help train in the one ones you lack.
