NBC Nightly News has reported that Bank of America used methods to charge over $1700 in overdraft fees made from purchases on a debit card by a customer. In fact, we learned that a source close to a lawsuit involving Chase for a similar issue was charged over $1200 in fees without any remorse by the bank. The purchases made were allowed after a deposit was put on hold, but the bank charged hundreds of dollars in fees for transactions that included a $3 purchase from an amusement park vending machine, according to the source. The fee charged was $35, which makes the bottle of soda one of the most expensive in the world, $38.00.
"I tried to file a small claim in New York Civil Court," says the source, "But [Chase] used a paralegal out of Texas who wouldn't even give me a refund for one transaction. Once they charged one fee, it just steam-rolled over a holiday weekend with an inability for me to take action."
NBC reported that industry estimates of $27 billion are projected this year from debit card overdraft fees.
