Emerald partners with COPE

Emerald Group Publishing Partners with the Committee on Publication Ethics

Emerald Group Publishing Limited is pleased to announce its partnership with COPE (the Committee on Publication Ethics) from 01 January 2009. COPE is a registered charity in the UK that promotes ethical conduct in scientific research and its publication in science journals. Its main role is to offer advice to editors of academic journals on tackling issues affecting integrity of work, such as suspected research or publication misconduct. This partnership will provide Emerald with additional support to its editors. Rebecca Marsh, Publishing Director of Emerald says: “We are delighted to be partnering with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and to be able to offer guidelines to all Emerald journal editors on how to apply best practice when handling investigations into ethical issues. Though rare, editors are occasionally faced with suspected research or publication problems. Emerald prides itself as a publisher that offers an excellent service to its editors and other stakeholders and we see the adoption of the COPE guidelines as an important step in providing a genuinely valuable extra service to editors and authors. We also support recognized standards in scholarly research and value the independence of COPE in the application of these standards.” Established in 1997 COPE has now over 3500 members. The COPE forum meets quarterly to discuss cases as do their governing body the COPE council. This will give Emerald editors the opportunity to discuss and learn more about publication ethics and to meet other editors. It will also enable them to identify potential problems. COPE acts as an external body available for advice when any aspect of misconduct arises. COPE have written flowcharts that offer a step-by-step guide for editors to deal with the most common breaches of publication ethics in journals. These include duplicate publication, suspected plagiarism and suspected fabricated data. COPE also funds research on issues relating to publication misconduct, in addition to organising annual seminars and an online distance learning course. For more information regarding COPE, visit:
