Finally Being Eco Friendly Can Be Chic

For most of us, the words fashion and ethical paired together bring to mind images of shapeless potato sack garments made of hemp in dull flat colors that fit poorly. Although recently there has been an uprising of talented designers, working in eco

The Leila Hafzi Spring/Summer 2009 UTOPIA collection of cocktail dresses and gowns are produced in Nepal, in a fair trade project using eco-friendly fabrics and sustainable painting processes, that produces very little water run off. Increasingly, luxury designers like Hafzi are questioning the ecological impacts of conventional fabrics such as cotton, which uses 25 per cent of the world's pesticides or the use of polyester blends made from petroleum, a toxic non-renewable resource. “I think it is important for artists and creative people to emphasize global awareness regarding our responsibility to preserve the earth we are about to destroy” Leila says.   She continues “Realizing the effects of product development in the 3rd world made me passionate about the work toward providing that ethical and ecological trade and making it possible in high end fashion” About the collection: This Spring/Summer 09 Utopia Collection by Leila Hafzi is light and feminine and brings a certain whimsy to those women whose strength and style are integral. This is where summer meets the seventies with the long dress as the protagonist, the sexy mini as its counterpart. Bold Tibetan mythology creatures featured on many of the garments were drawn by acclaimed tattoo artist Mike the Athens. The silhouettes inspired by ancient Greece are ethnic, lavish and handcrafted. Using a rainbow of colors: vital, vivid and playful - from the golden Buddha to the deep turquoise sea.
