Louisiana-Lafayette Team Report
ULL (2-2, 0-0) enters its bye week at a perfect time.
After all, consecutive games against Kansas State, LSU and Nebraska are bound to take their toll.
The Ragin’ Cajuns, who upset Kansas State, were outscored 86-3 in the two games to LSU and Nebraska, and they’re a banged up football team.
Still, ULL survived the first third of its schedule as well as expected. In fact, few thought the Ragin’ Cajuns would beat Kansas State.

ULL will open Sun Belt play against a much-improved North Texas team, which lost 37-21 in its opener to Middle Tennessee, on Oct. 3.
There are some question marks offensively for ULL as it has struggled to score. However, it’s hard to truly evaluate where the offense is because of the caliber of competition the Ragin’ Cajuns have faced.
By beating Kansas State, ULL certainly proved it will be difficult to beat at home. The two losses weren’t a good indicator, either, has to how they’ll play on the road in conference play.
Regardless, the first four games were proof enough that ULL could be a surprise team in the Sun Belt Conference.
NOTES, QUOTES
—ULL lost Tyrell Fenroy, the school’s all-time leading rusher last season, as well as two-time 1,000-yard rushing quarterback Michael Desormeaux. As expected the offensive production has gone down as ULL is averaging just 15.5 points a game.
—ULL has just two sacks in four games, but its offensive line has allowed only two.
—ULL already has five interceptions after picking off just nine passes last season.
NEXT GAME: ULL vs. North Texas, Oct. 10—The Ragin’ Cajuns should open Sun Belt play with a victory, but they can’t overlook a much-improved UNT squad. ULL was picked sixth in the Sun Belt, but looks like a team that can compete with the upper echelon of the league.
SEPTEMBER AT A GLANCE: ULL completed the first month of the season with a 2-2 record. Considering the Ragin’ Cajuns played Kansas State, Nebraska, LSU and Southern, that is probably better than expected. Beating Kansas State was a confidence booster that should carry over into Sun Belt play.
QUOTE TO NOTE: “It will be brief. We played a great football team. We did not play very well. We had some bad matchups, and they took advantage of it.”—ULL coach Rickey Bustle when asked about last week’s game at Nebraska, which beat the Ragin’ Cajuns 55-0.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
LOOKING GOOD: Aside from 31-3 and 55-0 losses to LSU and Nebraska, ULL’s defense has actually been impressive. ULL has very fast linebackers and a deep secondary, which has been hit some injuries but played well nonetheless. The offense has faced some uphill battles, but the line has allowed just two sacks. All in all, ULL looks primed to compete with any team in the Sun Belt.
STILL NEEDS WORK: ULL’s offense has been up-and-down and its only complete game was against Southern. The offensive line is very good, but first-year quarterback Chris Masson is still trying to adjust to being the starter. That being said, Masson and the Ragin’ Cajun offense have enough weapons to cause opponents problems in Sun Belt play.
STAR WATCH: ULL’s strength this season will be on the defensive side of the ball. Senior LB Antwyne Zanders is the leader of the group and already has a team-high 37 tackles in four games. He also had three tackles for losses. If there is a first-team all-conference player on defense, it’s certainly Zanders.
CRITICAL DECISION: The big decision was arguably made before the season started when coach Rickey Bustle opted to start Chris Masson over Brad McGuire at quarterback. Masson has thrown for 729 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another score. Once ULL gets into Sun Belt play, it will get a better idea what type of quarterback Masson can be.
ROSTER REPORT:
• QB Chris Masson (knee) sat out the second half against Nebraska. ULL is off this week, so he will likely return to the lineup.
—WR Marlin Miller (shoulder) missed the Nebraska game.
—WR Richie Falgout (ankle) is out.
ULL (2-2, 0-0) enters its bye week at a perfect time.
