Children are exposed to a variety of sports from a young age at school, at after-school clubs and at school-holiday activity breaks. Trying a range of sports enables them to discover where their talents and passions lie.
But is the range of sports offered comprehensive? Are these children really getting the chance to try everything?
Targetline director and PGA Professional Paul Thornley thinks not. He feels that one of the most important games of all is being missed off the curriculum: golf. That’s why he is campaigning to see the game introduced into schools, and it’s even been tried and tested already – with Targetline – with great success.
Targetline (http://www.targetline.co.uk) is a system that brings golf tuition indoors, making it accessible to everyone who wants to learn. It can be safely used in a confined space and because it is designed to give instant feedback when used as a swing practice aid that means it can also be used as a competition; and competitions are great for inspiring kids to perform optimally in sport.
Paul Thornley explains what happened when Targetline was tried out in one school: “Twenty children attended Targetline golf lessons throughout whole term. It was an after-school activity but despite this, not one of the pupils – an equal mix of boys and girls - dropped out. Even students who had no interest in other curriculum sports came along and got involved. All the kids were given score cards so they could mark each others’ results. At the end of the session the teacher put the scores on the overhead projector so everyone could see how they had done. As they left, they all commented on the fact that they had ‘played golf’ Now how could they have done this, after school, as a group, on a golf course?”
Targetline is ideal for schools and activity centres wishing to add golf tutoring to their curriculum. It eliminates the need for trips to the golf course, and makes the sport accessible to everyone at school, at the sports centre, at the gym or even at home.
Kevin Marron, the teacher that managed the Targetline School of Golf over the term was very impressed. He said, “It is completely impractical to take kids en mass to a golf course, so sadly this is one sport they all seem to miss out on as part of their sports education. Targetline enabled us to introduce the children at our school to golf without even stepping outside the sports hall. The scoring system made the coaching competitive, and the kids loved it!”
