An interesting report came out today, which puts the recent controversy surrounding the Wake County School District busing debate in a new light. A preliminary report released today indicates that student achievement in the school district has fallen from last year. The No Child Left Behind Act establishes the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standard which "requires schools to meet attendance targets and reading, math, and language arts proficiency targets for various groups of students, including minorities, students with disabilities, students with limited English proficiency and students eligible for free or reduced-price lunches." For 2009-2010, 61 of the 158 schools in Wake County met this standard, which is down from 98 last year...
