Fox Meadows Medinotes e Works for Maine Physician

Dr. John Kazilionis saves time and money by using what he calls the perfect electronic health records system in his family-focused medical practice.

Dr. John Kazilionis, a physician in family practice based in South Portland, Maine, has been on a quest to find an electronic health records system that really works – for close to two decades. Circa 1985, he joined a group of a dozen physicians who were seeking to develop an electronic method to maintain medical records. By 1988, the group had disbanded with little success. “The technology just wasn’t there yet,” admits Dr. Kazilionis. Well into the new millennium, Dr. Kazilionis’s process of trial and error continued, with the emphasis on the latter. “When you spend a great deal of money on systems that don’t work, or that just don’t meet your needs, it gets frustrating,” explains Kazilionis. Finally, in 2004, he discovered MediNotes e. It was exactly what he’d been looking for all those years. The program met every need that Dr. Kazilionis had regarding the utilization of medical records, including the ability to customize templates. But he was wise enough to not simply rush back to his office and instantly incorporate the program into the seamless flow of his busy office. There was more to it. “I knew that I needed to invest the time to learn the program thoroughly, and then my financial investment would come back to me tenfold.” In fact, the doctor’s “second internship,” this time one spent learning the intricacies not of human anatomy but of a dynamic system of software, was the culmination of an apprenticeship that finally achieved meaning. Since March 2004 when MediNotes e became a crucial ingredient in the everyday management of his practice, Dr. Kazilionis has observed some key benefits relative to time and money saved. “I’ve not only significantly reduced the amount of money I spend, I’ve increased the amount coming in,” he asserts, “MediNotes e allows me to code higher with less hassles, for instance. I’ve also completely done away with transcription. That alone saves me more than $9,000 a year.” But even more valuable is time saved. “After I’ve seen patients, I don’t have to spend extra time charting. This alone means that I’m more attentive to the needs of my patients. What could be better than that?”
