Your Park in Pictures

A new photography initiative is being launched in Swansea to encourage more people to visit their local park

Swansea residents are being urged to pick up their cameras and bring their favourite local green spaces into focus.

In a bid to encourage more people to make the most of Swansea’s 52 parks, Swansea Council is launching a photography initiative, ‘Your Park in Pictures’.

People are being urged to check out their local park and capture a favourite scene on camera to encourage others to visit their park too.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Graham Thomas said: “We're lucky to have so many wonderful parks and outdoor spaces in Swansea.  With photography becoming more popular the parks are great locations for people to visit and practice their skills.  Images taken by those who live in the city can only help to further show off how beautiful Swansea really is.”

He added: “Whether it is to enjoy a relaxing stroll, admire the beautiful flora and fauna or take the dog for a walk there are plenty of additional reasons to enjoy Swansea’s parks.

“From the beautiful green flag parks of Clyne Gardens, Singleton Botanical Gardens, Brynmill Park and Victoria Park with their colourful floral displays to the green open spaces of Singleton Park, Cwmdonkin Park, Parc Llewelyn and Parc Melyn Mynach there’s plenty to see and do.”

Before taking pictures for the competition budding photographers should check out the full terms and conditions for ‘Your Park in Pictures’ on the council website at www.breatheswansea.com.  By visiting the website people will also be able to locate their nearest or favourite park.

The images should be of scenes. Photographers need to get permission from any person that may be in their shot before they take their picture.

The best images will be displayed on the main parks webpage with a digital photo frame for the winner.

The winning image, along with a number of runners up, will also have their entry displayed on the BBC Big Screen in Castle Gardens throughout September.

Photographs can be submitted to marketing@swansea.gov.uk, along with a name, address, contact number and a brief description of where the photo was taken.  Photos can be colour or black and white.  The minimum age to take part is 16.  Final entries must be received before Friday 5 September.
