New School Preparatory breathes life into Shakespeare

New School students put on a free showing of Shakespeares The Comedy of Errors

Orlando, FL  –Shakespeare is not a word that New School students dread. In fact, they take his plays to the stage.    New School Preparatory students will be performing Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors on May 28th, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Trinity Prep Auditorium, 5700 Trinity Prep Lane, Winter Park, FL 32792. This event incorporates all students- kindergarten through eighth-grade. It is free to the public. Each spring, New School Prep stages a Shakespearean play, performed in Bard’s original English. This year’s performance will include singing and dancing to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.  Past performances have included Romeo and Juliet, Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado About Nothing. The plays are a vital part of the school’s integrated approach to learning. They not only teach the students, but are successfully able to bring what is performed and learned to life. The students work on the play for six consecutive weeks, while still maintaining a full intensive load of academics. Through teamwork, the balance between school and the play is achieved. No matter the level of talent, Shakespeare allows students the opportunity to emerge from the shadows and build confidence. “The main idea is that students learn how to present themselves with poise in front of others,” Karen Sorin, assistant director of the school, said. “This is a skill that will carry them throughout their lives. This experience boosts the students’ confidence, and they walk away with a cultural experience like no other.” About New School Prep Founded in 1995, New School Preparatory provides students in kindergarten through grade eight with a demanding academic curriculum geared toward Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences.
