In the 1970s, Irene White was a young bride from Germany struggling to understand both American language and culture.
Thanks to The Phil Donahue Show and a degree in English literature, the German émigré adapted.
For the past 20 years, White has been making the transition easier both for émigrés adapting to Rochester and American-born business people sent on foreign assignments.
White's company, Language Intelligence at 16 N. Goodman St., has a staff of 16 full-time and 15 part-time teachers instructing 417 language students, from children to senior citizens. But translation services now account for more than half of the business.
"We now translate and localize into more than 80 languages, with more than 500 linguists all over the world," White said.
White won't divulge annual revenues but said the company has seen double-digit growth over the past two years.
She attributes the company's success to her approach to teaching language, which uses situational phrases rather than the lock-step of grammatical drills.
A targeted direct-mail approach helped grow the business, too. For instance, the company mounted a campaign offering its services to people in the medical diagnostic field all over the United States after the European Union announced a change in the way it would do business.
Bosch Security Systems of Perinton has been relying on Language Intelligence since 2001 to translate its instruction manuals into 34 different languages. "I like the speed and convenience of the service," said Tom Brown, global documentation manager for Bosch. "They handle everything."
