Mephedrone, also known as 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC) is a psychoactive drug and research chemical of the phenethylamine, amphetamine, and cathinone chemical classes. It reportedly produces stimulant and entactogen effects that are comparable to those of similar drugs such as MDMA ("Ecstasy") and methylone. Its systematic name is 1-(4-methylphenyl)-2-methylaminopropan-1-one. Metabolism of a cathinone produces chemicals structurally similar to amphetamine and adrenaline.
Mephedrone, nicknamed "meph" is sold in high street "head shops" (which sell bongs and rolling paraphernalia). "Legal highs" is the catch-all tag for an array of substances that give users a euphoric experience while staying within the law. It is Mephedrone that is increasingly the partygoers' legal high of choice. Users report intense euphoria, talkativeness and increased levels of energy.
