On 17th June parts of the changes proposed to the Criminal Records Act to both limit and eliminate certain convictions from being pardoned were passed through the House of Commons.
LIMITING PARDONS FOR SERIOUS CRIMES ACT:
The House of Commons has approved changes to the Act to extend the amount of time someone must wait before they are eligible to apply to get their criminal record sealed. The Bill is now in the Senate.
Once passed people convicted of serious criminal offences must wait 10 years from the completion of their sentence to be eligible to apply for a pardon.
ELIMINATING PARDONS FOR SERIOUS CRIMES ACT:
This legislation is before the Public Safety and National Security Committee for review. After this time it will undergo a 3rd reading and then move on to the Senate.
