NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF.—Two prominent Southern California attorneys, Michael D. Schwartz and Richard A. Schmidt, are leading a series of fall workshops for experts who act as consultants to the legal community. The workshops, Trial Series for Experts, are sponsored by the Forensic Expert Witness Association (FEWA), a diverse group of professionals sharing common goals related to forensics and expert-witness testimony.
The three-session workshop series includes:
• Session 1: Sept. 13 in Los Angeles – Expert Witness Seminar – topics range from establishing and challenging expert qualifications to advanced expert testimony techniques
• Session 2: Oct. 25 in San Diego – Deposition Skills Workshop – attendees will practice having their deposition taken and receive feedback, building on the techniques covered in Session 1 (not a prerequisite, but recommended); limit: 30
• Session 3: Nov. 15 in Orange County – Trial Testimony Workshop – attendees will practice testifying as witnesses through direct, cross and redirect examinations, building on the techniques covered in Sessions 1 and 2 (not a prerequisite, but recommended); limit: 30
“Michael Schwartz and Richard Schmidt are top litigators and this Trial Series will provide invaluable information on what happens in a court room and well as teaching experts how to prepare for a deposition and give testimony in a trial setting,” said Lyle Coe, FEWA’s 2008 president.

In addition, FEWA members regularly serve as expert sources to the news media, providing commentary on news events related to their fields of expertise.
The organization has more than 600 members, with new chapters forming in the Midwest and Arizona this year. FEWA also publishes a quarterly newsletter and sponsors continuing education workshops and other activities. The centerpiece of FEWA’s ongoing professional development program is its annual Expert Witness Summit. The next summit will be held in La Jolla, Calif., February 26-28, 2009.
