The announcement marks a resumption of the daily service the airline stopped in early 2006.Continental’s decision to resume flights is a good indication of how strong Edmonton’s economy has remained, said Reg Milley, president and CEO of Edmonton International Airport.
“Even when there’s a lot of downturn in the economy and airports all across the country are seeing their numbers go down, our trans-border numbers, our numbers between ourselves and the United States to the end of July, are up still 11 per cent overall over last year,” Milley said.
The daily flights will be a boon for local business, but also for people who travel for leisure. Houston is a major hub for Continental Airlines, and travellers can connect there to flights going to Florida and South America, Milley said.
Although the daily Continental flights were cancelled in 2006, Milley said the situation is different today. The airport has increased the number of direct flights to the U.S. in the past few years and more people are taking them.
