The Living Theatre continues it Readings Above Realism Series on May 31st with a free staged reading of scripts by Brooklyn playwright Wade Savitt.
The Living Theatre has always been in the forefront of political theatre, and with this set of short plays, collectively called March-and-Fiesta, the Living continues its political work. March-and-Fiesta addresses gentrification, immigration, and current issues that The Establishment doesn’t want us to talk about.
But Savitt’s satires are not merely political commentary - they’re surreal hallucinations. Characters include Mayor Bloomberg’s suit, a scorpion, and an indignant pearl-headed pin:
“Nobody asks how many angels can dance on the point. It’s always the head, the head. Well from the perspective of the point, in case you care, the answer is eighteen.”
The Living Theatre continues to champion new forms, new playwrights, and new issues.
