Ignite celebrates first years achievements

The UKs only group promoting cultural diversity in the Public Relations profession will celebrate its first birthday this month.

Over the last 12 months, the group has had a number of notable achievements, including the launch of a pilot mentoring scheme for young Black and Minority Ethnic professionals, successfully challenging the candidates for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) presidency to produce positioning statements on diversity in the industry, and running a successful series of networking events throughout the year.

The celebration will take place on 28 July 2010 at Pearson PLC in London, with additional sponsorship from Linstock Communications and Unicorn Jobs. At the event, Ignite Chair, Bieneosa Ebite, will reflect on the group’s achievements, from the humble beginnings of a group of three people to over 70 people attending a flagship networking event featuring Chuka Umunna, now Labour’s MP for Streatham.

Speaking about the organisation’s work, Bieneosa Ebite said: “This has been a crucial year for putting diversity on the PR map. Our objective has been to ensure that the benefits of cultural diversity are recognised and an increasing number of professionals from all backgrounds have engaged with the idea of diversity and are beginning to consider how it might affect or improve practice in their organisations.

“Our work with the CIPR and the Public Relations Consultants Association has ensured that the issue stays on their agenda, which is very pleasing. However, our intention is also to nurture new and existing talent and so the success of the networking events has been particularly encouraging.”’

Jon Bennett, Co-founder of Linstock Communications, endorses Ignite’s work and said:
“Improving cultural diversity across the profession is vital.  There are moral and commercial imperatives to ensure that talented individuals from different backgrounds have every opportunity to create a great career for themselves in public relations. Ignite plays an important role in reminding us that this issue is too important to be put to one side, and we’re delighted to be supporting their anniversary, celebrating a very successful first year.”

At the celebration, guests will enjoy food and drinks, meet other practitioners, and find out more about Ignite’s plans for the rest of the year. The event runs from 6.30 to 9pm and will be held at Pearson PLC, 80 The Strand, London. Practitioners are welcome to join the celebration.
