Serge Strosberg reveals his latest Masterpiece "Les Demoiselles de New York" at a One-Night Vernissage
New York 04/17/09 - On Thursday, April 30th, Artist Serge Strosberg, Curator Stacy Engman, and Simply Chic PR will host a one-night vernissage of Serge Strosberg’s extraordinary new work depicting transgendered people, "Les Demoiselles de New York." The venue is Strosberg's studio loft 515 Broadway, Suite 4A New York, from 6-9pm.
Invitees include: Kenny Kenny, Patrick McDonald, Murray Hill, Laura Hoptman, Lauren Bush, Lucy Mitchell-Innes, Emily Fisher Landau, Simon and Alex McCord Van Kempen.
Strosberg drew inspiration from Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, and from his models Kenny Kenny, Jordan Fox, Malik so Chic and Chloe Bijoux. The artist also immersed himself in the transgendered night scene at venues such as Vandam Sundays, Amanda Lepore’s night at Cain, Bungalow 8 and Circus. He said, ‘Throughout this project, I have met some extraordinary individuals from a marginalized part of society. Beyond the eccentricity of those New York icons who live the night at its fullest in Chelsea’s clubs, I have found that they are more human, more open minded, and feel more genuine emotion than most ‘normal’ human beings.’
Serge Strosberg was born in 1966 in Antwerp, Belgium. He studied in Paris at the Ecole Superieure des Arts Graphiques (Academie Julian) and at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts. He has had over 20 exhibitions in Europe and the United States, including five Museum shows. His works are in 120 private collections and four Museums. He has been well reviewed by over 20 publications, including Art in America and Barrons.
His style is expressionistic realism, which renders a stylized, ritualistic expression of reality as we know it. It is a style outside of the school of American photorealism. He makes his paint by hand and employs the traditional method of oil and egg tempera. Egg tempera dates to the fifteenth century and has been traditionally used in icon painting.
Recent and current exhibitions include The Hidden Trace: Jewish Paths Through Modernity at the Felix Nussbaum Museum, the Ritz-Carlton Jupiter Club, a solo exhibition at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, and the Laba festival.
