Dolphin Tale Movie Inspired By A Dolphin Named Winter

- Sep 06, 2011 - Her story is amazing and inspirational.  So much so that Hollywood is releasing a major 3D movie about Winter on September 23rd, 2011, "Dolphin Tale," starring Morgan Freeman Harry Connick, Jr., Ashley Judd, Kris Kostefferson and Winter (playing herself).  So what is so special about Winter?  

Winter is the first bionic seagoing dolphin or mammal for that matter. After a tragic accident when she was two months which resulted in the loss of her tale and nearly her life, the baby dolphin became the center of attention at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, and eventually the world.  Winter's story, from rescue to rehabilitation to the first ever creation of a prosthetic dolphin tail is as captivating as it is heartwarming.  The movie adds to the story a young boy named Sawyer (Nathan Gamble) who befriends the dolphin and Dr. McCarthy (played by Morgan Freeman).  You can only imagine the potential for solid family entertainment.  

As a result of all this attention, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium saw huge increases in attendance followed by cash grants, gifts, and funding that has allowed it to expand around its famous resident.  The lobby is now graced by one of those gifts.  

Noted marine life artist, Donjo, was one of the first people to swim the Winter.  Donjo had heard of her plight, came to visit, and was captivated by Winter and her story. “They filmed me swimming with Winter for about 2 hours. We bonded, she is my friend.” says Donjo. After that he spent five months crafting a 10 foot bronze sculpture titled "Winter's Dream."  He says he considers David Yates, the head of Clearwater Marine Aquarium to be "A hero in my eyes."
