Every parent of a teenagers wants, not only to survive the teen years, but also have their sanity and the friendship of their offspring after the process is over.†says speaker Mike Moore, author of “ You’re Not Alone: 25 Ways to Parent Teenagers and Stay Saneâ€
Moore, a former high school teacher and father of four grown children speaks to parent groups throughout Canada and the USA on parenting teenagers using humor and effective communication.
Here are 5 effective strategies from You’re Not Alone.
1. Care enough to set limits and establish rules. Just make sure that the limits set and the rules established are reasonable and few in number.
2. Negotiate with your teens. Let them state what they want; you state what you want and then try to reach a negotiated compromise somewhere in between. There are some things that aren’t negotiable.
3. Treat your teenager like you would an adult, but don't always expect adult behavior from them.
4. Don't preach at them. Adolescents hate preaching and will turn you off when you do.
5. Practice the three R's of effective parenting. LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN.
6. When you're wrong, say you're sorry. When you do, you are teaching them an invaluable lesson in human relationships.
7. Laugh easily and often with your teenager.
