Nebraska Team Report He arrived at Texas Tech as a walk-on and wasn’t chosen to start at quarterback when the season began, yet junior Steven Sheffield seems to offer a spark the Red Raiders don’t want to lose. Mike Leach said his decision whether to keep Sheffield as his starter or reinsert Taylor Potts, who suffered a concussion in the Oct. 3 win against New Mexico, will be made at game time when the Red Raiders play at Nebraska this Saturday. If he polls his players, the Texas Tech coach may learn Sheffield is their choice. Two Red Raiders who were asked for their preference took little time before naming Sheffield. “He’ll come in and light up a whole room. He’s not a very gloomy guy,” offensive tackle Marlon Winn told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. “Right now, I think you have to go with the hot hand,” added linebacker Bront Bird. “I don’t think Sheffield’s done anything to lose the job he’s been given right now.” The question to ask, however, is if it’s fair to take a job from Potts because of an injury. Then again, Leach does not acknowledge injuries publicly and may not give it much consideration when deciding on a starter. It is not known whether Potts has been cleared medically to play. Both Potts and Sheffield have thrown for seven touchdowns in a game this season, against Rice and Kansas State, respectively. Sheffield’s 370 first-half passing yards against the Wildcats was a Tech record. Nebraska figures to offer a much stiffer challenge, particularly at home. The Huskers have ridden their defense to a 4-1 start and feature one of the country’s top defensive linemen, tackle Ndamukong Suh. Texas Tech is 4-2 overall, 1-1 in the Big 12. Texas Tech Team Report Ndamukong Suh has a slight problem. The senior nose tackle, who’s having a dominating season for No. 15 Nebraska, doesn’t know how to celebrate after making big plays. Suh, who’s 6-foot-4 and 300 pounds, said it’s not in his nature to celebrate. The subject only came up because somebody asked Suh if he’s preparing some sort of signature move as his name becomes more prominent in Heisman Trophy talk. “Nope,” Suh responded. “That’s something that my teammates give me a hard time about, that I don’t know how to celebrate.” Suh is garnering more national attention after his dominating performance on national television at Missouri on Oct. 8. He had six tackles, a pass breakup, a sack, a forced fumble and an interception. His seven pass breakups this season are already a school position record, as are his four career interceptions. “It’s all good and gravy now, but I’ve got to keep playing and stay focused on this team and helping this team win,” Suh said of national attention. “When the time comes, if I’m still up in the (Heisman) race, I’m more than happy to have my name up there. But it’s not one of my main focuses. “It’s all about this team and trying to get this team back to where they’re supposed to be and be a winning program again.” He’s doing that, too. Suh has a team-leading 32 tackles to lead a resurgent Nebraska defense. The Huskers are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12 Conference entering Saturday’s home conference opener against Texas Tech.
