Radiowaves the revolutionary school podcasting site has teamed up with the UK- wide learning programme, Their Past Your Future, to take 24 young people from York to Berlin on an educational venture as the city embarked upon the 20th anniversary of the Berlin wall being demolished.
The project led by The Imperial War Museum gave the chance for young people born after the wall came down to learn more about the Cold War from those who were there.
The students then created live daily video reports and blogs about their experience and shared them to the masses via Radiowaves, the safe social network for schools.
Lucy Cook, Business Development Coordinator from Radiowaves, said, “The project was a unique experience for the youngsters, many of whom were born before the conflict and who were previously unaware of the struggles faced by many. The activities undertaken by the pupils included site visits, oral history and work with older people and the wider community, which not only aided their learning of this sensitive subject, but encouraged social interaction with different social groups.”
Built in 1961 by the communist regime in east Germany, the Berlin wall divided the city for 28 years, and separated families, transport links and the heart of the city, while border police and minefields prevented those from crossing over the boarder in search of a better life in the west.
The visit was then filmed and published on Radiowaves and many of the students posted reflective blogs as a result.
