The UK School Games With Radiowaves

For four days every September the UK School Games brings together the best young sportspeople and athletes from around the country to compete in a schools version of the Olympic Games.  Radiowaves, the revolutionary school podcasting site, went to Cardiff last weekend where their young reporters covered the event in full on its S2R (Supporter to Reporter) network. The UK School Games is a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age. The sports programme was increased in 2009 to include track cycling which, combined with the existing programme of athletics, badminton, fencing, gymnastics, hockey, judo, swimming, table tennis and volleyball, brought the total to ten sports.  The integrated programme of disability events in athletics, swimming and table tennis increased the athletes competing in 2009 to over one thousand five hundred. The UK School Games is organised by the Youth Sport Trust and seeks to create an inspirational and motivational setting which encourages more young people to take part and succeed in sport.   Lucy Cook, Business Development Coordinator from Radiowaves, the safe social network, said, “We are delighted to be associated with the UK Schools Games and Radiowaves produced the daily athletes’, spectators’ and parents’ newspaper. Every article was written by a young person and we replicated a newsroom environment by working to real deadlines.  All our young people were journalists during the event and had access to competitors, spectators and event organisers.” In addition to producing the daily UK Schools Games newspaper, the S2R reporters recorded many interviews with participants and celebrity sporting guests and these were also posted on the Radiowaves education broadcasting site along with some excellent video montages of competitors in action. Ms Cook added, “The UK School Games provided terrific journalistic experience for all our Radiowaves reporters and an insight into the high pressure world of producing a newspaper to a tight deadline.  It was also great fun as our school podcasting reporters were able to interview some sporting icons including Darren Campbell, Denise Lewis, Ellie Simmonds, Sue Campbell and Sascha Kindred.” For more information on Radiowaves, the school blogging site, please visit their website at http://www.radiowaves.co.uk.
