Everyone was caught off guard on June 21, 2010, when newspapers revealed that General Stanley McChrystal, commander of NATO and ISAF troops in Afghanistan, had ridiculed senior White House officials in a cover story run by Rolling Stone magazine. The senior White House officials that McChrystal allegedly used as a punching bag were none other than Karl Eikenberry, Joseph Biden, and the President himself, Barack Obama. After McChrystal - dubbed the Runaway General - had expressed his disdain for Vice-President Biden and communicated President Obama's non-chalant attitude in the conduct of the longest war the US has ever been involved in, he (Gen McChrystal) came out publicly and denounced the Rolling Stone story, acknowledging that his contribution and the 'profiling' that he did for the story were 'unprofessional' and far below the standard of personal honesty and professional integrity that he has sworn himself to. But the damage was already done.
