Free Expo Of K-12 Education Opportunities In Nyc

Free education event for the NYC education community.

LinkEducation and the Department of Education's Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy are making it easier for parents, teachers and principals to find programs to enhance their children's education opportunities. New York, NY, September 16, 2008 - On September 27th over 60 education organizations (e.g. City Year, High 5 Tickets to the Arts, Literacy, Inc. (LINC), Brooklyn Arts Council, Big Apple Circus) will gather at the NYU Kimmel Center from 12-4pm to display their programs as school leaders, parents, educators, and children "shop" for quality K-12 education opportunities. LinkEducation and the Department of Education's Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy are teaming up to make sure New York City educators, administrators, and parents alike know about the many free or low-cost education opportunities available to their children. Anna Markowitz, Co-Founder of LinkEducation.org, the go-to place for education resources in NYC said, "We think it is critical for everyone that relies on our public schools to have access to education programs geared toward helping their children succeed academically. We designed this Education Expo to do just that: link people with the education opportunities in their communities." At the Education Expo, teachers can find new field trip ideas or innovative ways to boost their curriculum; parents can find tutoring or after school programs to engage their children; and principals can find free or low-cost programs to meet enrichment needs within their school. LinkEducation and the DOE's Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy made this event free and family friendly, with theater, music and dance performances throughout the day. Says Martine Guerrier, DOE Chief Family Engagement Officer: "It's important to create great educational partnerships. This is an event where adults and students alike can find inspiring education opportunities while having fun." The event will include performances by the Striking Viking Story Pirates, Flocabulary, Big Apple Circus and TheatreworksUSA. Are you interested in education? Have a child of your own? Looking for education information but are busy on the 27th? Check out LinkEducation online at www.linkeducation.org About the DOE Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy Our job is serving New York City public school families. We work to help parents answer questions and solve problems. We also have launched programs and initiatives to improve relationships with families and school communities more broadly. The Chancellor established the Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy on July 1, 2007 to transform how the Department of Education serves New York City's nearly 1 million public school families. Under the leadership of the Chief Family Engagement Officer, Martine Guerrier, OFEA has unified the Department's structure for family outreach and has created a framework for ensuring that the parent voice is heard. The Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy comprises a dedicated parent support team that spans every borough, every school district, and every school in New York City. OFEA is the primary point of contact for families and parent leaders who have concerns about their schools, and it also supports the City's school-based and district-based parent leadership associations. The office also provides written translation services and over-the-phone interpretation for schools and DOE offices, and trains Parent Coordinators to make every school a place where families feel welcome, supported, and respected as partners in education.
