- Sep 25, 2011 - With all the thousands of language learning products on the market, it can sometimes be difficult to choose what book or product works best for you. Professor Western has developed a new method that might just help. Using mnemonics, he demonstrates just how easy it can be to remember new vocabulary terms.
In one of his books, Excuse My What??!!, Professor D.J. Western shows that many words are easy to remember simply because they sound like taboo or swear words in English. Take the word “winter” in Arabic, “/shita/,” it sounds just like a popular English curse word. To remember how to say “winter” in Arabic, all you would have to do is to remember that sometimes “winter can be pretty ‘shita’.”
Throughout Professor Western’s books he uses clever artwork to go along with each mnemonic making retention of new vocabulary words even easier. In addition to Excuse My What??!!, Western has also released Arabic Vocabulary Made Easy Volumes I & II. Volume II focuses on military, media, and business Arabic vocabulary terms. This winter or “shita” – Professor Western will be releasing Advanced French Vocabulary Made Easy. Its intent is to help those taking popular tests like the French Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) to succeed on the higher levels of vocabulary.
When asked what was his motivation for writing these books, Professor Western replied, “I believe anyone can learn a second language. You just have to have the right motivation.” Professor Western thinks that if you make language learning fun, people will be motivated to learn more. “I just took the fact that most people are willing to learn foreign language swear words a step forward. By showing that some words actually sound taboo or funny in English, but are actually normal everyday vocabulary in a foreign language...the learning process becomes fun.”
