Dallas, TX – Southern Bible Institute is paying tribute to its founders and leaders during the upcoming year. The tributes start during September 2010 honoring the founders who developed the biblical curriculum and built the financial foundation for the 83-year-old institute. SBI has a legacy of preparing pastors, missionaries and church school teachers who have touched thousands of lives. Dr. Edmund Ironside was the first president of Southern Bible Institute from 1927-1942. He developed the idea of a bible college where African Americans could get a strong bible teaching as a foundation to build their ministries. Dr. Ironside gave a lot of his energies teaching at the SBI and working to develop its success, many times without being fully compensated. The speaker for the program will be Scott Preissler, Eklund Professor and Chair of Stewardship at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Ron Anderson, a long time professor at Southern Bible Institute, is the reader for the program.

Dr. Henderson Fox became the second president of Southern Bible Institute in 1945 after graduating from Dallas Theological Seminary. He remained president until 1971. Dr. Fox carried the SBI story across the country every summer. He spoke at 40 to 50 churches and faith-based groups raising financial support for the institute. The speaker for this program is Professor David Allen, a Professor of Preaching at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The reader for this program is Don Bryant, a professor at SBI.

Dr. Gordon Mumford was the third president to lead SBI from 1971 to 2005. He died in August 2006. Dr. Mumford continued the tradition of traveling the country speaking about Southern Bible Institute to raise financial support for the school. He expanded his audience to not only churches of various denominations; but to faith-based conferences. “He is responsible for the school being moved from the Pleasant Grove location to its current 12 acre site at 7200 S. Hampton Road in Dallas, TX and for its present growth to over 300 students”, said Dr. Martin Hawkins, current President of SBI. The speaker for this program is Dr. Jeffery VanGoethem, Pastor of Scoffield Bible Church. The reader for the program is Ben Pegues, a faculty member at Southern Bible Institute.
