An interesting dilemma is developing in the children’s fantasy realm. A couple series have gotten the attention of various religions and they have raised up against them, disclaiming them as being heathen.
First it was the Harry Potter series that drew fire. Some religions claimed they promoted acts of the devil. That was proven wrong, of course, when Pope John Paul II looked into them, but now they’re back in disfavor again.
Next comes Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials Trilogy, of which the movie The Golden Compass is the first, which some religions are claiming to be promoting atheism.
Both of these series, however, are selling very well.
Now everyone already knows all of this, so why is this interesting, you ask? It’s because a new series has risen that is proving to be well able to join the brawl, only this one is on the opposing side. It’s the Ezekiel Mayhill series, as yet little known but growing in readership. This series also does not promote any religion but it contains a more upbeat mention of God and prayer.
It is yet to be seen how religions today will view this new series. I’m thinking they will still not approve of it because it contains magic and wizards, dragons and such, and the various religions will still view this as sacrilegious. Why is debatable, but the general public will have a hay day with all this. Because if this series performs as expected, the war could be on.
So the question is: Do we go with The Golden Compass and believe there is no God, or that God is dead? Or do we go with Harry Potter and remain neutral, even though these books have been accused of expressing spiritual unsavoriness? Or do we go with the books of Ezekiel Mayhill that promotes a better outlook of the spiritual?
