Deirdre Donine, New Bethlehem, P.A., and Dawn Smitley , Avonmore, P.A., have realized the impact that budget cuts have on deficiencies in training through first hand experience in the fields of law enforcement, human services, domestic violence and mental health. Smitley and Donine are the directors of Kemdy III, a non-profit organization created in 2008. Kemdy III is motivated to fill the gaps in training caused by a lack in funding for educators, law enforcement, social services, churches, youth groups and community service agencies. Together the directors have over 1,000 hours of training on topics including Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Sexually Violent Offenders, Behavior Modification, Behavioral Profiling, Drug and Alcohol Use and Abuse, Forensic Interviewing, Investigations, Interviewing, Permanency Planning, and Mental Health.
In September 2008 Kemdy III created a child protection plan for the First Church of God in New Bethlehem, PA. On October 26 Kemdy III presented the policy along with a 1 hour training titled “It Can Happen Here” to 60 volunteers and church staff. The child protection plan instituted guidelines for the protection of the children and procedures for reporting incidents.
Randall Hopper, Youth Director of the First Church of God said, “The First Church of God in New Bethlehem had a Child Protection Policy meeting for all of the volunteers involved with the children and youth programs in the church. Dawn and Deirdre prepared a presentation for us. There were 60 people present for the meeting and the feedback we received was great. The presentation was very informative. Dawn and Deirdre were well prepared and offered assistance by answering all of the questions we asked them. We will certainly call Kemdy III again in the future.”
Kemdy III is a non-profit organization concerned with the welfare of Western Pennsylvania communities. Their mission is to provide the highest quality training to assist organizations in better serving their communities.
