The Teacher Training College in Niassa was established in 1998 to train “Teachers of the Future” for the rural primary schools in Niassa province, Mozambique. The teachers are trained to teach in the rural primary schools using modern methods of teaching and to initiate community development in these rural areas. The college is in N’sauca village 25 km from Lichinga, the provincial capital of Niassa province. The college aims to train teachers who are innovative, modern, and competent, and teachers who can take community development as part of their teaching profession. The college has trained and qualified 293 teachers since it was established in 1998. The graduated teachers assume teaching positions in rural primary schools in Niassa province. The college follow a 2 ½ years training programme. The training programme is divided into 8 periods, with each period having its own name and characteristics. Student teachers spend 7 periods at the college and one period out of college. Whilst at the college the student teachers mobilise community members to engage in development actions. Communities around the college participate in malaria campaigns, HIV/AIDS awareness programs and a multitude of cultural and educational events. The 4th period enable the teachers to teach at nearby schools half-day and spend the other half-day studying at college. The students observe each other’s lessons and do an evaluation after the lesson - coming up with ways of improving the lessons in the future. The student teachers gain confidence and integrate pedagogic theory and practice. In the 6th period the student work as teachers for 11 months, during the school practice. The student teachers are distributed in the 11 districts in Niassa province. Besides teaching in primary schools the student teachers carry out community development projects. The projects improve the standard of life for the communities around the school. Some students have embarked on latrine construction, disease control malaria and tuberculosis campaigns, adult education, and establishing community preschools. Development Instructors at the college are running evening programs, sports, English clubs, and developing the school vegetable garden. The college is a centre of activities for teachers from the surrounding schools. They attend seminars at the college, the community uses the college facilities. The college has an evening school and has graduated 150 adults in adult literacy since the start of the program in 1999.
