The Programme at the Teacher Training Colleges
® The programme at the Humana People to People teacher training colleges lasts 2½ years. It is approved by the Ministry of Education in the respective countries.
® The programme is divided into periods of varying lengths, each with its own headline.
® Each period is concluded with an internal evaluation and examination.
® Each period contains studies in the subjects, as well as practical ventures.
® DmM (The Definition of Modern Methods) is the main educational method used at the teacher training colleges. This modern pedagogical method gives the students extraordinary possibilities to learn as it transforms each student into being the main responsible for his own education.
The eight periods of the education:
1. The World in Which We Live - 3 months
In this period the students learn about the whole world. Each student has the whole range of subjects at his or her disposal - ¼ of the studies and ½ of the courses are related to the headline "The World in which we live". Topics are within History, Geography, Biology, English, and within the World of Science, the World of Today and the World of the Future. This period serves to give the students an international perspective from the beginning of their education.
2. Our Country - 3 months
In this period the students learn about their home country. ¼ of the study tasks and up to ½ of the courses are related to the headline "Our Country Angola/ Mozambique/Malawi". Topics are within History, Geography, Biology, and within contemporary politics and the future perspectives of the country. The students also carry out investigations in order to get a closer insight in their own society.
3. We Continue Building Our College - 1 month
The students get an insight into practical work and its leadership, management and organisation. They get first hand experiences in construction work, maintenance, gardening and other similar activities.
This month contains only this subject - there are neither courses nor studies.
4. School Practice and Further Studies - 5 months
In this period the students practise teaching in the neighbouring primary schools half of the time. The other half of the time the students continue with their studies and have courses. The task of the period as a whole is that the students, as a result of their practice, write each a textbook about teaching entitled "100 Big Pedagogical Questions" of 120 pages.
5. Specialisation and Charter Subjects - 5 months
This period has two specialisations.
The first two months the students specialise in the subjects Portuguese, Math and Science - in Mozambique the students choose one of the subjects for specialisation, in Angola the students study all three subjects in this period. The next three months they choose one subject out of the four Charter Subjects in which they specialise.
The name "Charter Subjects" refers to the Charter of Humana People to People and links the work of the teacher with the intentions described there. The Charter Subjects underline the multiple jobs of the teacher and emphasise the teacher's understanding of him/herself as a local generator and initiator of development in the whole community.
The Charter Subjects are:
® Women's Advocate - to work for improving the position of women in the community.
® Entrepreneur - to be able to start up and run commercial enterprises in order to create economic development and surplus.
® Health Care Expert - to engage in health issues of children and their families and indeed the whole community.
Politician - to be able to influence political life, working for the improvement of the community.
6. The Teaching Profession as a Part of the Teacher Training - 11 months
In this period the students work as primary school teachers in the rural areas, exercising the job as teachers. They train practical teaching, methods and organisation of teaching. Here they are training their co-operation with the children and the parents, the co-operation with the headmasters and being a part of a teacher council, and they are producing exciting and interesting education and educational materials as well as making inputs to the schools as such.
The students go through an introductory course in the history of the village school and its importance for the country. The students do community work and continue their studies and their practice fields within the Charter Subjects.
7. The Pedagogical Workshop - ½ month
In this period the students are back at the college and learn how to establish a Pedagogical Workshop and how it is professionally run and managed.
8. The Final Examinations - 1½ months
In this period the students sit for their final examinations and graduate as teachers.
