– Friday the 13th may be considered unlucky by some, but event planners at the North Chapel at Liberty Station in Point Loma think it will be a perfect day for a “Lucky in Love” marathon of free weddings. For the second year in a row, the charming North Chapel and KyXy 96.5 FM Radio are teaming up to give away 30 free weddings or vow renewals during a 10-hour marathon of nuptials from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2009. The free weddings, each lasting 20 minutes, will be given away to couples based on essays written and submitted to the radio station. The “Lucky in Love” marathon of weddings application will be available beginning Jan. 1, 2009, at www.KyXy.com. Deadline to submit an application is Feb. 1, 2009. KyXy 96.5 FM staff will select the 30 lucky couples. “Last year’s wedding marathon was wonderful and extremely emotional,” said Bridget Wear, who is coordinating this year’s wedding ceremonies to be held at the recently restored North Chapel. “We had military couples, young couples, long-married couples renewing their vows and so many other romantic and inspirational love stories.” This year is expected to be equally amazing. Each of the selected couples will receive a one-of-a-kind wedding or vow renewal at the North Chapel Liberty Station in Point Loma. The ceremony will include a chaplain, decorative flowers throughout the historic site, bridal bouquet, groom’s boutonniere, and the traditional wedding march played on the chapel’s massive pipe organ by professional organists provided by Organ Stop Sales, Inc. All of the ceremonies will be webcast live throughout the day at www.KyXy.com. The 300-seat North Chapel offers plenty of room for family members and invited guests to witness the joyous occasion.  And for post-wedding ceremony celebrations, Wear says Panera Bread & Bakery and Sammy’sWoodfired Pizza, both located at the Marketplace at Liberty Station, and Solare Restaurant & Lounge at NTC Promenade, all have generously donated their venues and appetizers for a wonderful reception for the couples and their guests after the vows have been recited. Other sponsors include Viejas Entertainment & Production, A Better Deal Tuxedo, Clergy Referral Service, Cupcakes Squared, Bauman Photographers and Jacob & Spadea Jewelers. The North Chapel at the Marketplace at Liberty Station, 2881 Roosevelt Road, was restored and reopened in 2007 by C.W. Clark, Inc., a La Jolla-based real estate development company. The two-story non-denominational chapel was originally built in 1942 and used for a variety of causes and celebrations from worships to weddings by recruits and other personnel at the San Diego Naval Training Center, as well as for Navy ships stationed here or visiting the local port. The chapel, along with dozens of other military buildings on the bayside property, was closed by the Navy in 1997 and sat vacant until the makeover. Since reopening, the historic chapel has hosted numerous community events and religious ceremonies, including dozens of weddings.
