CAPE TOWN - South Africa Namaqualand flowers and the indigenous Khoi culture - first known inhabitants of South Africa - come together on a visit to Ratelgat, near Cape Town, South Africa. Ratelgat is a historical Griekwa farm on the Knersvlakte (plains). The Griekwa presence dates back to 1920 when the paramount Chief, Die Kneg, A. A. S. le Fleur 1 (1867 - 1941) led his people to escape English Colonialism and to foster their Griekwa culture here. Ratelgat http://www.kontrei.co.za/ratelgat-knersvlakte-1.php is close to the N7 en route to Springbok and Namibia, and driving 25 km from Vanrhynsdorp to Vredendal brings the visitor to the heart of the Olifants River Valley's wine and vegetable industry. The accommodation at Ratelgat offer visitors the opportunity to experience indigenous building styles and materials, while still offering comfortable surroundings. There are fully equipped cement chalets for self catering guests with solar hot water systems, gas stove and fridge, and solar power for lighting. Some attractions and traditional entertainment at matjieshuise will also be available to guests accommodated in the chalets. At the Griekwa monumentand graves of the forefathers 28 matjies houses, twin bedded  units,  were erected according to the old tradition. Senior members of the Griekwa people acted as mentors while young volunteers learned the trade of building these structures. They are all furnished in simple, traditional style. Visitors can make use of a hiking trail where endemic succulents can be seen along with San rock art. There is also a small, natural theatre for cultural events and a recreational area around the swimming pool. Ratelgat fits well into a Namaqualand flowers tour. Settle in late afternoon for a full board, 2 night stay in the Griekwa community's holy grounds amidst the flatland flowers of the Knersvlakte: http://www.kontrei.co.za/ratelgat-knersvlakte-1.php
