Not only showfolk and stevedores, but people from every walk of life are opting for tattoos instead of exchanging engagement or wedding rings. Some get wedding ring tattoos until they can afford a real ring, although it's the tattoo that's really for keeps. Others use tattoos as an alternative to rebel against actual rings altogether, and still others choose tattoos because they work at a job (dishwasher, for example) where a real ring would be in the way, get lost, or go down the disposal.
Choose tattoos with care. The tattoo you decide on should mirror both your commitment to each another and your unique individualities. Some people get a ring design tattooed on their fingers; others get the first name, pet name, or initials of their loved one. Some go deeper, with an image that has sentimental value: the numbers of the day they met, or words that have a meaning only the couple can understand. Either way, a tattooed wedding ring represents shared commitment, a testament to love that you can never take off and leave behind or accidentally drop down the plumbing.
Of course, with the divorce rate in America being more than 50%, what about the possibility of splitting up? Laser tattoo removal ain’t cheap. Unless you have deep pockets, the image you select will be with you for the rest of your days.
Having the name of your favorite band or the bluebird of happiness inked on your ankle is one thing. Even if you end up disliking hair bands ten years later, you still cherish the experience and view it as a permanent reminder of tempestuous youth, a memorial to the teen you once were, a product of the past that led you to the present.
Wedding ring tattoos, on the other hand (forgive the pun), are way more serious. Think as long and hard about taking the leap into tattoos as you do into marriage. No, harder.
An argument against wedding ring tattoos is: "What if you break up?" Maybe you'll stay together forever and live happily ever after, despite the odds. Maybe you won't. If you don't, the tattoo can remind you of a time when you were happy and in love, a memorial to a time you may never know again. You learned everything you could from each other and then moved on.
Every step you take leads you to where you are now; even if now you’re with someone new. Even if you no longer have any contact with the person who was once so important to you that you had their name tattooed on your wedding ring finger, never forget that you needed to go through that experience in order to reach the level of happiness you now have.
And besides, a ring finger tattoo can always be covered up by a real one. Or you could have it lopped off.
