The book opens with a shocking murder/suicide at the White House,
during which the President of the United States is murdered by his
own son-in-law, Secret Service agent Robert McCarty, who then turns
the gun on himself.
The real mystery ensues when McCarty’s college buddy, journalist Jeb
Willard, is handed a cryptic note following his friend’s funeral by
McCarty’s parish priest. The note speaks of a deep conspiracy, and
Willard returns to his North Carolina home to seek the sage advice of
his father, a witty small-town newspaper man.
Although his father warns him not to get involved, Willard is sucked
into a maze of plots and threats as he reluctantly agrees to investigate
the murder at the persuasive request of the country’s first female
President, Helene Fordham, who, as Vice President, inherited the
position.
Lewis’s meaty character development and intriguing plot line will
hook both political junkies and mystery buffs alike, and the book’s
highly explosive climax ensures that readers won’t be disappointed by
this thrilling page-turner.
“The writing is crisp and the action is non-stop.
Tom Lewis has a gift for the well-turned phrase.”
